What to expect when riding the

VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL

Virginia Creeper Trail is a family-friendly Rails-to-Trails recreational trail that everyone can enjoy.  The Virginia Creeper Trail offers a gentle ride with beautiful scenery.

HOW LONG IS THE VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL?

The trail is 34 miles from Whitetop Station and mostly downhill through Damascus (the halfway point) and back in to Abingdon.flattens out quite a bit.

WHAT IS THE ELEVATION OF THE TRAIL?

The highest elevation (3,576 feet) of the trail is at Whitetop Station.  This is where local outfitters will drop you off when you take a shuttle.  From there, you will ride mostly downhill (17 miles) to Damascus (1,952 feet), then on to Alvarado Station (1,900 feet) and then ending at the Abingdon trailhead at (2,087 feet)

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RIDE THE TRAIL?

Normally it takes anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours to ride halfway (17 miles) from Whitetop Station to Damascus and then another 2 hours from Damascus on into Abingdon.  We recommend that you take your time, stop and eat lunch along the trail and take in the "scenery". There are many beautiful and scenic spots along the trail, so don't forget to bring your camera!

HOW DO WE GET TO WHITETOP STATION?

There are local outfitters that have specially designed trailers and shuttle vans that offer transportation to and from the trailheads.  CLICK HERE for local outfitters in Abingdon and Damascus.

WHAT IS THE SURFACE OF THE TRAIL LIKE?

Crushed limestone and cinders leftover from the train days and tiny gravel, but hard packed in most areas.

ARE THERE ANY PLACES TO EAT AT ALONG THE TRAIL?

Yes! There is a cafe/restaurant about every 8 miles from Whitetop Station down to Damascus.

ARE THERE RESTROOMS ALONG THE TRAIL?

Yes. Restrooms are located at Whitetop Station, Creen Cove Station, Creek Junction, Damascus Town Park, Alavarado Station, Watauga Crossing and the Abingdon Trailhead.

IS THERE CELL PHONE COVERAGE ON THE TRAIL?

Not on the upper section.  They sometimes work on the Damascus to Abingdon section, depending on your provider.
